THE GIANT ELAND IS
ON THE BRINK OF EXTINCTION

We build capacities to save the giant eland, as well as other antelope species of  West and Central African savanna.
We are Antelope Conservation.

THE GIANT ELAND

  • It is the largest antelope in the world.
  • Its natural range and numbers have been severely reduced by the loss of habitat, competition with cattle and poaching. There are two subspecies:
  • The Eastern giant eland lives in Central African republic, Northern Cameroon and South Sudan with the population estimated less than 10,000 individuals
  • The last wild population of Western giant eland lives only in the Niokolo Koba national park in Senegal.
  • Less then 250 Western giant elands remain in the wild.
  • There is also a successful semi-captive breeding programme in two private Senegalese reserves.
  • Giant eland is a flagship species of West and Central African savanna.
